Candidates who clear the written (Mains) examination are called for this typing skill test, which checks whether they can type Hindi text accurately and at an acceptable speed on a computer.

Since Hindi is the primary working language in most Bihar government offices, the Hindi typing test carries real weight for LDC aspirants. For bilingual clerical posts, the skill test is usually conducted in a sequential format — candidates first attempt the English typing test, followed by a short software-controlled interval, and then move on to the Hindi typing test, all within the same sitting.

Typing Test Pattern

The BSSC Hindi typing test follows a fixed, computer-based format, generally conducted using TCS Ion-based typing software. Key elements of the pattern include:


Duration: The test runs for exactly 10 minutes.
Passage Length: The Hindi passage typically contains around 1,500 keystrokes, drawn from official and administrative Hindi vocabulary — think government schemes, administrative orders, and formal correspondence.
Font: Candidates must type in the Mangal Unicode font. Kruti Dev and other non-Unicode fonts are not permitted.
Keyboard Layout: Candidates choose between the Inscript layout or the Remington Gail (Krutidev-style) layout before the timer starts. This choice is locked once selected, so candidates should decide in advance and practice on that specific layout only.
Screen Layout: The typing passage is displayed on the upper half of the screen, with the typing area located directly below it.
Features: The software includes auto-scrolling, real-time word and error highlighting, and fully functional Backspace support for corrections.
Sequence: For bilingual posts, the English test is conducted first, followed by a brief interval, and then the Hindi test on the same day.

Speed Requirement

The minimum typing speed required for the BSSC Hindi typing test is 30 words per minute (WPM), calculated on a net-speed basis after error deductions.

The 30 WPM requirement is a net speed, meaning it already accounts for mistakes — typing fast with too many errors will pull your effective speed below the qualifying mark.
Candidates must sustain this speed across the full 10-minute duration, not just in short bursts.
In keystroke terms, 30 WPM in Hindi roughly corresponds to around 9,000 key depressions per hour (KDPH).
Aiming for exactly 30 WPM is risky. Since error deductions reduce your net speed, most successful candidates practice at a buffer of 5 WPM or more above the minimum requirement to leave room for occasional mistakes under exam pressure.

Result & Scoring

Net speed calculation: Your gross typing speed is adjusted downward based on the number and type of errors made during the test.
Error types: Errors are generally categorized as full mistakes and half mistakes. In Hindi typing specifically, incorrectly typing a half-letter (matra or halant mistakes) is a very common source of full-mistake deductions, so accuracy with conjuncts and matras matters as much as raw speed.
No merit impact: Typing test performance is not added to your final merit score. Your rank in the overall selection is determined solely by your marks in the Mains written examination.
Consequence of failure: If a candidate fails to achieve the required net speed, they become ineligible for typing-designated posts such as LDC. However, this does not necessarily end their candidature — if non-typing posts (such as certain Revenue Clerk positions) are available and the candidate's written score qualifies them, they may still be considered for those roles.

Practice on Mangal font only — not Kruti Dev, since BSSC mandates Unicode.
Master matras and halant — half-letter errors count as full mistakes, so drill conjuncts.
